A giant congenital ranula: ignorance leading to feeding difficulties

The term “Ranula” originates from the Latin Word Rana which means “underbelly of a frog.” Ranula are epithelial retention cyst or mucus extravasation pseudo arising sublingual glands. They rare in children. A one-year-old female was brought to paediatric surgery emergency OPD by her mother with complaints swelling oral cavity since birth, gradually increased size attain current size. Mother also gives History difficulty feeding. Clinical examination revealed large protruded tongue, cystic floor mouth measuring around 6×4 cm, elevation tongue. Child further evaluated; ultrasound suggestive ranula. Marsupialisation done. Intraoperatively, fluid aspirated for analysis and wall opened excised, lateral margins were sutured base mouth. Cyst elevated amylase normal LDH levels. post-operative period uneventful. histopathology report showed pattern consistent followed up 1 year there no evidence recurrence. We case giant congenital rarity this condition children its atypical make unique. treated child marsupialization recurrence noted. Hereby I would like state that symptomatic ranulas though can be managed marsupialisation.
